Abstract

This research paper aims at studying and analysing the initiatives of the government, the positive impacts and need to overhaul the Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), 2005- the social security and employment guarantee scheme for the unorganised sector.

This paper makes an analysis into the intricacies of the scheme and stresses on the need for the continuation of the scheme in the following years as it has proved to be a lifesaver for millions of Indians.

However, for MGNREGA to realise its true potential there is an immediate need for effective implementation which will be possible by a persistent political will. The paper delves into the conflict of MGNREGA wages with the Minimum Wages Act, 1948 and states the lessons learnt so far and mechanisms that should be set in place for maximising results.

The paper also makes an empirical research to arrive at a result as to the divergence in perspectives of rural and urban population as to the implications and benefits of MGNREGA.
